The Hardest CPCU® Exam

The CPCU® 540 is widely regarded as the hardest CPCU® exam, with the CPCU® 530 often being considered the second hardest exam.

In this blog, I will break down why these are the two hardest CPCU® exams, with some insight on what to expect on each exam.

This insight comes directly from our CPCU® 540 online course and CPCU® 530 online course.

CPCU® 540: The Hardest CPCU® Exam

Historically, the pass rate of the CPCU® 540 exam is around 65% to 70%. Making it the hardest CPCU® exam. This is widely considered the most difficult and most failed CPCU®exam for a multitude of reasons.

Here’s why the CPCU® 540 is the hardest CPCU® exam:

  • Subject matter: this exam is heavily focused on the topic of finances. It’s a specialized exam that tests you on difficult and complex financial subjects. You will be required to understand financial statements balance sheets and income statements, financial ratios such as liquidity ratios and probability ratios, and financial vehicle topics such as bond and stock investment strategies. This complex exam covers a wide variety of financial topics focusing on the profitability of an insurance company. This content is difficult to learn if this is your first introduction to financial metrics. This exam covers many of the topics that you would learn in a collegiate-level financial analyst course. Additionally, there are a lot of mathematical formulas to learn and memorize. In fact, there are approximately 80 formulas that you need to know to pass this exam. You will need to memorize these formulas to calculate the proper financial metrics.
  • Length: in terms of content, this is the longest CPCU® course with 11 chapters of content. And, as previously mentioned, the subject matter is not easy. Give yourself a little extra time to study for this exam, there is a lot of content to comprehend and memorize. You will need the extra time.
  • Math: in my opinion, the reason this is the hardest CPCU® exam, is because of the amount of math-related questions that will be on this exam. You will need a financial calculator to pass this exam. You will be required to answer difficult math-based scenario questions that require you to calculate financial ratios to choose the best investment. This exam will put you in the shoes of a financial analyst, it will give you a bunch of numbers (many that you don’t actually need) and will require you to plug in the numbers to the correct formula to calculate the answer for the given scenario. Meaning, you will not only have to memorize the formulas, but you’ll also have to understand how to apply the formula and be able to dissect the scenario question to choose the correct formula to apply given the scenario. That is why this exam is so hard. That is why this is the hardest CPCU® exam. For an example of these difficult exam questions, check out our CPCU® 540 exam question blog.

CPCU® 530: The Second Hardest CPCU® Exam

The CPCU® 530 is often considered the second hardest CPCU® exam. Historically, the pass rate of the CPCU® 530 exam is around 70%.

The reason this exam is so hard is because of the complex unique subject matter covered in this course. The CPCU® 530 is all about the insurance legal environment. You will need to memorize over 600 legal definitions.

This CPCU® exam is so difficult because, unless you are an attorney, all of this subject matter will be new. When I studied for this exam, I learned hundreds of new words. You will learn about the legal process and how a case is processed step by step from start to finish, along with legal terms such as promissory estoppel, hearsay, statute of frauds, tort law, strict liability, and the components of negligence (to name a few). To pass this exam, you must memorize all of these terms.

This exam will put you in the shoes of a legal professional. It will give you a case question that you need to analyze to choose the correct answer based on the legal definitions that you memorize. On the bright side, the majority of the questions are definition based. So if you memorize the definitions, you will have no problem passing this exam. There is no math on this exam, unlike the CPCU® 540. But, you will be given a case question, and be asked to define which term best describes the scenario or be asked as an attorney which is the best strategy. For an example of these difficult exam questions, check out our CPCU® 530 exam question blog.

The Hardest CPCU® Exams

In summary, the CPCU® 540 is the hardest CPCU® exam. With a historical pass rate between 65% to 70%, this is the most failed exam. This is the hardest CPCU® exam because it is a heavily math-based and finance-based exam. You will be required to calculate complex financial ratios, analyze balance sheets, and review scenarios to choose the best financial strategy.

The CPCU® 530 is the second hardest CPCU® exam, this exam is difficult because of the complex legal terms and definitions that you will need to memorize. You will be required to analyze a case question, put the shoes of an attorney, to choose the correct answer based on the legal definitions you memorized.
