How Long Does it Take to Get CPCU®
In terms of how long it takes to earn a CPCU® designation, the industry average is 2 to 3 years to earn the CPCU® certification.
There are eight exams to pass to earn the CPCU® designation. This means, on average, using industry study materials, most students pass about one exam per quarter (or four exams per year).
It can be done faster, I passed my CPCU® in just one year by passing two exams per testing window, and that is what most AssociatePI students do because our courses are designed to help you pass your exam in just two weeks of studying.
That being said, just know that the industry average is around 3 years to earn the CPCU® certification. For comparison purposes, that is just about as long as it takes to earn your MBA.
How Long Does it Take to Pass a CPCU® Exam
Typically, it is recommended to study for 6 to 8 weeks per CPCU® exam. That is why, on average, it takes up to 3 years to earn the CPCU®.
Truthfully, you don’t need that much time. I passed each of my exams by studying for just two to three weeks, about 1 hour per day. And that’s how we designed our courses at AssociatPI, to cut out the fluff so you can study and pass your exams and less time with effort. On average our students start studying and pass their exam in just two weeks (studying about 1 hour per day on their lunch break).
When can I take my CPCU® exam?
One of the challenges, and reasons that the CPCU® certification can take up to 3 years on average, is that you can only take your CPCU® exam during qualified testing windows. There are four testing windows, open for two months at a time. Meaning, There are 8 months of “open” exam time when you can take your CPCU® exam and four months during the year when testing is “closed”.

You can take your virtual CPCU® exam any time during an open testing window. Testing windows are open on the following dates:.
- Quarter One: January 15th to March 15th
- Quarter Two: April 15th to June 15th
- Quarter Three: July 15th to September 15th
- Quarter Four: October 15th to December 15th
