About the CPCU® 540 Exam
The CPCU® 540 is the fourth exam in the series of 8 exams required to complete the CPCU® designation. According to nationally published CPCU® pass rates, the CPCU® 540 is the hardest CPCU® exam. The pass rate is typically around 72%.
The numbers don’t lie; in my experience, the CPCU® 540 exam was the hardest of all the CPCU® exams simply because the CPCU® 540 contains the most content (12 chapters) and is by far the most math intensive of all the CPCU® exams, that’s why we’ve compiled these tips and tricks to passing the CPCU® 540 exam.
These tips come straight from our CPCU® 540 online course where we implement these five tips throughout the course.
Tips to Pass the CPCU® 540
I’m sure you’ve heard horror stories about the CPCU® 540 exam, it’s a tough exam but here are a couple tips to make the entire process easier. If you focus and give yourself a little extra time you’ll have absolutely no problem at all passing the CPCU® 540 exam on the first attempt.
1) Give yourself extra time: I’m a strong proponent of studying 2-3 weeks per exam; you shouldn’t need much more than that. The CPCU® 540 is an exception to that rule. The CPCU® 540 is the largest of all the CPCU® exams in terms of content (12 chapters) and is heavily focused on mathematical formulas. The content is tedious and the formulas are tough to memorize. Plan ahead and give yourself a little more time for this exam, plan on at least 4-5 weeks of studying.
2) Make a cheat sheet: Make your own personal study guide and cheat sheet while you’re reading through the course. Taking notes and writing down the formulas may seem tedious but it will pay off in the end. I can’t stress enough that there’s a TON of content to memorize for the CPCU® 540 exam, you don’t want to be stuck reading and re-reading the entire course so be sure to take notes while reading through the course. This way you can refer back to your notes to study rather than re-reading the entire course.
3) Know the formulas: There are a lot of math formulas on the CPCU® 540 exam. Some will be provided to you and some you’ll need to memorize. Not only do you need to memorize the formula but you need to memorize how to apply the formula. Know the formulas and know in which scenario to apply each formula. My biggest tip is do not wait until you’re finished studying to memorize the formulas. When you see a formula in the course, write it down and memorize it. When you’re finished studying the chapter go back and quiz yourself on the formulas, make sure you have each formula memorized. Once you finish studying each chapter go back and quiz yourself again on all of the formulas, make sure you’ve memorized them all. If you’re curious about which formulas are provided on the exam and which are not, download our CPCU® 540 practice exam and formulas list. This will detail exactly which formulas will be provided to you and which you’ll need to memorize.
4) Practice as much as possible: This tip is a bit obvious but it makes all the difference. Take as many practice exams as you possibly can, make sure you’re practicing with exam questions formatted similarly to the CPCU® 540 and while you practice do so WITHOUT looking at your formulas cheat sheet. Treat your practice exam like the real exam; practice using real example questions and practice without the formulas. You won’t be given all of the formulas on the exam so make sure you’re practicing as if you’re taking the real exam without looking at the formulas.
5) Write down formulas at the exam: You’ll be provided with some note paper when you take the CPCU® 540 exam. As soon as you sit down to take the exam, write down every single formula that you can remember. Dump it all out of your head the second you begin the exam, this will essentially create a cheat sheet for you to use throughout the exam. Don’t stress trying to keep all of the formulas in your head while you answer the 85 multiple choice questions, write them all down as soon as you sit for the exam. Then focus on the question, not the formulas.
