CPCU® 540 Calculator – Approved CPCU® Calculators

You’re going to need a calculator on the CPCU® 540 exam, the exam is very difficult; it’s not possible to pass the exam without a calculator. This is the calculator we recommend. This is what our students use on the exam.

The exam is very math-intensive and will require you to memorize over 40 formulas, if you want to see what formulas you need to memorize you should download our practice exam and formulas guide detailing which formulas are provided at the exam and which you need to memorize.

Unfortunately, the testing center is pretty strict in regard to what calculators you’re allowed to bring to a CPCU® exam. Throughout this post we’ll detail everything you need to know about approved calculators for your CPCU® exam.

Recommended Calculator

CPCU 540 Calculator

We recommend the Texas Instruments BA II Plus Financial Calculator. Based on feedback from students, this calculator meets the testing guidelines and is allowed at the Prometric testing center. Most of our students use this calculator.

Here is the description of the calculator:

The BA II Plus Professional calculator features all the great features of its predecessor while packing in even more time-saving functions to make short work of complex equations. It’s an ideal choice for entry level and advanced finance, accounting, economics, investment, statistics, and other business classes. It’s also a great choice to bring to the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exam. Along with the standard capabilities of time-value-of-money, accrued interest, amortization, cost-sell-margin, and depreciation calculations, users can calculate more advanced business and finance related issues. It will handle net future value (NFV), modified internal rate of return (MIRR), modified duration, payback, discount payback, and more. Its rugged metal exterior, firm-touch keypad and anti-slip rubber feet make it ideal for anyone in accounting, economics, investing, statistics, and related businesses. Note-automatic power down feature turns off the calculator automatically after about five minutes of inactivity, the calculator turns on exactly as left

Prometric vs. On-site Calculator

A basic calculator will be given to you if you’re taking your CPCU® exam at a Prometric Testing Center, this basic calculator is a very simple battery-powered calculator with basic numbers. No alphanumeric numbers or graphing functions.

On-site centers do not provide calculators; you will need to bring your own approved calculator for your exam.

How to Approve Calculator – IMPORTANT

If you plan to bring your own calculator to an exam, you MUST print and bring the “calculator policy” portion of this confirmation notice published by The Institutes to the testing center to verify The Institutes’ criteria for an acceptable calculator. Information regarding the appropriate guidelines and detailed requirements of acceptable calculators can also be found within the publication.
