ARM™ Designation Updates [July 2026]: What’s Changing and How We’re Responding

In case you haven’t heard, there are major changes coming to the ARM™ designation.

The Institutes has announced that the current ARM™ course materials are expiring, and a completely new ARM™ curriculum is being introduced.

In this blog post, I’ll break down exactly what’s changing, when these changes take effect, and how AssociatePI is responding to ensure you can continue studying with confidence.

What’s Changing?

The entire ARM™ curriculum is being restructured with new course titles and updated content. The current ARM™ courses are expiring.

The deadline to test on the current ARM™ materials is September 15, 2026.

Expiring Exam Name:

  • ARM™ 400: Risk in an Evolving World (EXPIRING)
  • ARM™ 401: Holistically Assessing Risk (EXPIRING)
  • ARM™ 402: Successfully Treating Risk (EXPIRING)

New Exam Name:

***This is important. If you are enrolling in a virtual exam, you MUST check the exam name to ensure it is the “Expiring” exam name.***

When Do These Changes Take Effect?

The deadline to test on the expiring ARM™ materials (old content) is September 15, 2026.

After September 15, 2026, only the new ARM™ courses and exams will be available.

Here’s What You Need to Know

If you do not plan to take an ARM™ Exam during the Q3 testing window (July 15th to September 15th), then you can ignore this blog post! Your AssociatePI courses will be updated on September 15th with the new exam content (at no extra cost to you).

BUT, if you have already started studying, or you plan to test on the ARM™ before September 15th:

  • Your course is based on the EXPIRING (old) ARM™ content
  • Which means you MUST take the EXPIRING ARM™ exam before September 15, 2026 (or re-study the new exam content in Q4)
  • When you register for your exam, you must purchase the exam for the EXPIRING course materials here: https://web.theinstitutes.org/arm-expiring-exams

How to Enroll in the “Expiring” Exam

Step 1: Go to The Institutes “ARM™ Expiring Exams” page: https://web.theinstitutes.org/arm-expiring-exams

Step 2: Scroll down to find your desired exam (ARM™ 400, 401, or 402).

Step 3: MAKE SURE you are selecting the exam for the expiring course materials (the old courses):

  • ARM™ 400: Risk in an Evolving World (EXPIRING)
  • ARM™ 401: Holistically Assessing Risk (EXPIRING)
  • ARM™ 402: Successfully Treating Risk (EXPIRING)

You can also register by calling (800) 644-2101 or emailing CustomerSuccess@TheInstitutes.org

***This is critical: The Institutes now offers two versions of each ARM™ exam: The expiring exam (based on the old content you’re studying) and the new exam (based on the new content launching after September 15, 2026). You must register for the expiring exam since that’s what your current AssociatePI course is preparing you for.***

Course Waivers

The good news is, if you pass an expiring ARM™ exam before September 15, 2026, you’ll receive credit toward the corresponding ‘new’ ARM™ course:

Any previously completed ARM™ exam is counted toward the “new” exams (no matter how long ago you passed the ‘old’ exam). The designation itself is not changing; it’s just the name and content of the exams. So, if you have passed the ARM™401 exam before September 15th, it will still count as the “ARM™ 401” towards your designation. The Institutes actually states that directly here on this page under “course waivers”.

You can still take any of the “expiring” exams before September 15th, and it will count towards your designation. You can essentially mix and match the “old” and “new” exams to reach the final ARM™ Designation. So, your “old” ARM™ 400 and ARM™ 401, plus the “new” ARM™ 402, will still result in the same designation in the end.

Expiring ARM™ Course

Waives (New ARM™ Course)
ARM™ 400: Risk in an Evolving World ARM™ 400: Mastering Risk Management Techniques
ARM™ 401: Holistically Assessing Risk ARM™ 401: Managing Risk With Emerging Technology
ARM™ 402: Successfully Treating Risk ARM™ 402: Implementing Risk Management Strategies

The New Exams: My Assessment

We are well underway going through the new content and writing up the new courses, comparing the ‘old’ study material to the ‘new’ exams. Here’s my assessment thus far:

  • ARM™ 400 – Similar difficulty. The new exam is only seven chapters, and about half the course stays the same, with two chapters taken from the ‘old’ 401 (probability modeling and analyzing risk techniques) and two completely new chapters.
  • ARM™ 401 – The 401 gets easier! It’s an entirely new course and is only seven chapters. This exam is predominantly concept-based. No more math formulas, ratios, and complex financial topics like there was in the ‘old’ 401. This exam is all about risk concepts in AI, cloud computing, robotics, blockchain, and IoT. This exam is heavily technology-focused and covers the risks associated with those technological advances.
  • ARM™ 402 – Gets harder…Remember all those tricky topics that made the ‘old’ ARM™ 401 so difficult (balance sheet, liquidity ratios, leverage ratios, RAROC, MVS formulas, etc…)? Well, they’ve been moved to the ‘new’ ARM™ 402. UGH! In my opinion, the ARM™ 402 is now the hardest of the ARM™ 402 exams. The new exam is nine chapters, and while there are quite a bit of complex topics in the financial risk chapter (includes a lot of formulas and ratios) and some tricky topics in the legal risks chapter (such as understanding legal classifications and strategies), the rest of the exam is predominantly concept-based. Which is good news! The ‘easier’ chapters of the exam focus on understanding and managing different types of risk such as reputation risk, supply chain risk, personnel risk, and cyber risk. This exam takes a few chapters from the ‘old’ 401 course (financial risk and supply chain risk) and a few chapters from the ‘old’ 402 (operational risk, intellectual property, and legal compliance), along with four completely new chapters.

My Take

Overall, this is a pretty major change. Usually when there is an exam update, it’s just adding a chapter here, removing a concept there, or reshuffling some topics. That’s not the case with the ‘new’ ARM™ exams.

The result of this change is basically three new courses. I estimate that 10 of the ‘old’ ARM™ chapters are staying the same and are mixed around and shuffled to different courses (3 chapters from ARM™ 400, 4 chapters from ARM™401, and 3 chapters from ARM™402)…which means the other 13 chapters are entirely new.

That’s a big change!

My other observation is this: The ‘new’ ARM™ exams seem to be heavily concept-based (not much math or finance).

While that sounds like good news at first…here’s the bad news. The new concepts lead to A LOT of scenario-based questions on the exam. There are going to be a lot of open-ended interpretation-based questions where you have to analyze a scenario and choose which action is best to reduce/mitigate/manage the risk. These new exams essentially put you in the shoes of a risk manager. You must analyze the case, and given the scenario, choose the best risk-related action (just as a risk manager would do).

Here’s an example: Enviro-Safe is a hazardous waste remediation company. They have received a large contract to disassemble and transport extremely hazardous waste from a closed research facility to a government underground storage facility two states away. Enviro-Safe has assembled a team of experts and stakeholders for a comprehensive review of their processes and the unique hazards of this particular contract. There are many schools and communities along the transportation route and virtually all of the risks must be eliminated. Which of the following approaches to identifying risk is best for this job?

Answer: HAZOP Study

Explanation: Enviro-Safe should use the HAZOP process. HAZOP is primarily used for projects and systems where virtually all risks must be eliminated. The term HAZOP is an acronym for “Hazard and Operability Study.” HAZOP is a comprehensive review of a system or process. In this process, a team of experts and stakeholders gets together for a comprehensive review to identify risks that are associated with a particular process or system and then recommend potential solutions. HAZOP is used mainly for complicated, scientific systems such as nuclear engineering projects.

Tough, right? You can expect a good mix of these types of questions on the ‘new’ ARM™ exams.
